Broken And Contrite

For you don’t delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it. You have no pleasure in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.

— Psalm 51:16–17 WEB

Prayer

Holy God, I come before You with no confidence in religious performance, no trust in outward appearance, and no desire to hide behind what I have done for You while neglecting what is broken within me. I acknowledge that You see beneath songs, service, offerings, words, and visible devotion. You know the true condition of my spirit. You know where pride has dressed itself as strength, where fear has sounded like wisdom, and where performance has tried to cover places that need mercy.

I bring You my heart without polishing it. I bring You the places where sin has wounded my conscience, where stubbornness has resisted correction, and where self-protection has kept me from full surrender. Let my spirit be broken in the way that leads to life, not crushed by condemnation but humbled by Your holiness. Let my contrition be real, not emotional for a moment and unchanged afterward. Teach me to tremble at Your word and trust Your mercy at the same time.

I renounce every attempt to replace obedience with sacrifice, humility with activity, or repentance with spiritual language. Let nothing I offer You become a cover for what I refuse to yield. Search me deeply and kindly. Expose what pride has protected. Cleanse what compromise has stained. Restore what sin has damaged. Make my heart honest enough to confess quickly, soft enough to be corrected, and surrendered enough to obey without delay.

Let this brokenness bless my life and my family. Remove harshness from my words, arrogance from my decisions, and stubbornness from my relationships. Where I have wounded others through pride, grant me humility to make peace. Where my household needs healing, let tenderness begin in me. Let my private surrender become a doorway for public restoration, quiet obedience, and worship that carries truth.

I believe You do not despise the broken and contrite heart. I believe Your mercy meets me low. I believe You can make worship rise from the place where pride has fallen. Keep me near You, dependent on You, and yielded before You. Let my life become a sacrifice You receive—not because I am flawless, but because I am surrendered. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
