Rest by the River

He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

— Revelation 22:1-2 WEB

From the Classic

I saw that Christian and Hopeful went on their way to a pleasant river, which David the king called the River of God, and John called the River of the Water of Life.

The River of God is full of water. The Lord visits the earth, waters it, greatly enriches it, and prepares grain by providing for it. This river is not dry, shallow, or failing. It is full because it comes from the God who gives life.

John was shown a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of the street, and on both sides of the river, stood the tree of life. It bore twelve kinds of fruit and gave its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Then the waters were seen again, flowing from the house of God. They came from under the threshold, moving eastward, from the side of the altar. The man with the measuring line went forward and brought the prophet through the waters. At first the waters were to the ankles. Then they were to the knees. Then they were to the waist. After another measure, they became a river too deep to cross, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.

Then the prophet was brought back to the bank of the river, and there he saw very many trees on one side and on the other.

Prayer

Father, thank You for places where You restore weary pilgrims. Lead me beside the river of life that flows from Your throne and from the Lamb. Teach me to receive refreshment that heals, strengthens, and keeps me near Your way. When I am tired, do not let me run toward empty escape. Give me living water, fruitful grace, and renewed strength to keep walking with Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
