Better in the Low Valley

Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established.

— Proverbs 4:26 WEB

From the Classic

"Well said, Samuel," said the guide. "You have spoken like a man." "If I ever get out of here again," said the boy, "I think I will value light and a good road more than I ever have in all my life." Then the guide said, "We will be out soon."

So they went on, and Joseph said, "Can we see the end of this valley yet?" Then the guide said, "Look to your feet, because you will soon be among the snares." So they looked to their feet and went on, but the snares troubled them greatly. When they came among the snares, they saw a man thrown into the ditch on the left side, with his flesh torn badly. Then the guide said, "That is Heedless. He was going this way and has lain there a long time. There was one named Takeheed with him when Heedless was taken and killed, but Takeheed escaped their hands. You cannot imagine how many are killed around here, and yet people are so foolishly daring that they set out lightly on pilgrimage and come without a guide. Poor Christian! It was a wonder that he escaped here. But he was loved by his God, and he also had a good heart, or he never could have made it through."

Now they drew near the end of the way. Just there, near the place where Christian had seen the cave when he passed by, a giant named Maul came out. Maul used to ruin young pilgrims with clever arguments. He called Great-heart by name and said to him, "How many times have you been forbidden to do these things?" Then Mr. Great-heart said, "What things?" "What things?" said the giant. "You know what things. But I will put an end to your work." "Please," said Mr. Great-heart, "before we fight, let us understand why we must fight." Now the women and children stood trembling and did not know what to do. The giant said, "You rob the country, and you rob it with the worst kind of theft." "Those are only general charges," said Mr. Great-heart. "Come to the details."

Then the giant said, "You practice the craft of a kidnapper. You gather up women and children and carry them into a strange country, weakening my master's kingdom." Great-heart replied, "I am a servant of the God of heaven. My work is to persuade sinners to repentance. I am commanded to do all I can to turn men, women, and children from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. If this is truly the reason for your quarrel, let us begin as soon as you wish."

Then the giant came forward, and Mr. Great-heart went to meet him. As he went, he drew his sword, but the giant had a club. Without more delay, they fought. At the first blow, the giant struck Mr. Great-heart down onto one knee. At that, the women and children cried out. Mr. Great-heart recovered himself, fought with full strength, and wounded the giant in the arm. They fought for the space of an hour with such heat that the breath came out of the giant's nostrils like steam from a boiling pot.

Prayer

Father, give me alert steps and a teachable heart. Keep me from careless speed where snares are hidden. Help me listen to your warnings, stay near the guide you provide, and reject arguments that would pull me from repentance and obedience. Establish my ways before you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
