Beelzebub answered, "There may be something in what has been said, but the guess may turn out one way or the other. We need to find out whether Soul City understands how low it has fallen, and whether it knows anything about the plan we are preparing against it. If the city knows its danger, it may have guards posted at the gates, and it may double the guard on market days. But if we discover that the city is asleep, then almost any day will serve our purpose, though a market day would still be best."
Diabolus asked, "How will we know?" The answer came back, "Ask Mr. Profane." So Profane was brought in and questioned. He replied, "As far as I can tell, this is the present condition of Soul City: their faith and love have grown weak; Emmanuel, their Prince, has turned his face from them; they often send petitions asking him to return, but he does not hurry to answer them, and there is not much reform among them."
Diabolus said, "I am glad they are slow to reform, though I still fear their petitions. Yet their loose way of living shows there is not much heart in what they are doing, and without the heart, their actions are worth little."
Beelzebub said, "If Soul City is in the condition Mr. Profane has described, then it will not matter much what day we attack. Their prayers and their strength will not help them much."
Apollyon then said, "My judgment is that we move carefully, not in a rush. Let our friends inside Soul City keep polluting and defiling it by drawing it deeper into sin, because nothing consumes Soul City like sin. If this succeeds, Soul City will stop watching, stop petitioning, and stop doing anything that helps its safety. It will forget Emmanuel. It will no longer desire his company. If it can be brought to live this way, its Prince will not hurry back. A few hidden traitors, if welcomed and approved by Soul City, will do more to keep Emmanuel away and make the city yours than a massive army sent openly against him."
Bunyan pictures the enemy asking one searching question: Is the city awake? That question matters because a sleeping soul gives temptation an easier entrance. The danger is not only open rebellion. It is dullness, carelessness, and spiritual drift in ordinary life. Soul City is still praying, but the enemy notices the gap between prayer and reform. He knows that a prayer without heart, watchfulness, and obedience can become weak and hollow.
This is a loving warning. You do not stay awake only when life feels dramatic. You watch the gates on normal days too. Market day in the story represents the crowded, busy, distracted moments when many voices are coming and going. Those are often the moments when your soul is most exposed. The enemy would rather find you spiritually sleepy than openly defiant, because sleep feels harmless while it slowly lowers the guard.
Paul says, "so then let's not sleep, as the rest do, but let's watch and be sober." Watchfulness is not fear-driven panic. It is clear-eyed faith. It is remembering that your heart is precious to God, your habits matter, and your gates need attention. Soberness means you take sin seriously without forgetting grace. You do not stare at the enemy; you stay awake before God.
God is not careless with his people. He commands watchfulness because he loves the city he has redeemed. He does not tell you to stay awake because he is harsh, but because he knows what spiritual sleep can cost. In Christ, God gives you more than a warning. He gives you a Shepherd who watches when you are weak, a Spirit who wakes you when you drift, and mercy that calls you back before ruin settles in.
The heart can keep religious words while losing spiritual attention. It can ask God for help while quietly refusing reform. It can say it wants Emmanuel near while leaving the gates unguarded. This reading asks you to notice the places where your life has become casual about sin. The issue is not whether you have moments of weakness. The issue is whether you are willing to wake up when God lovingly warns you.

Choose one gate to watch today: what you listen to, what you look at, what you rehearse in your mind, or what you excuse in your behavior. Ask God for help, then take one clear step of obedience before the day ends.
Prayer
Father, wake my heart where it has grown dull. Teach me to watch without fear and to pray with a sincere heart. Guard the gates of my life, especially in ordinary moments when I feel least alert. Keep me close to Jesus, quick to repent, and ready to obey. In Jesus' name, Amen.
