Remembering the Cost of Carelessness

Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

— Psalm 27:1 WEB

From the Classic

Great-heart, their guide, stepped forward first against Grim and struck him so firmly with his sword that Grim was forced to draw back.

Grim cried out, "Will you kill me on my own ground?"

Great-heart answered, "We are standing on the King's highway, and you have placed your lions in the King's road. These women and children are weak, but they will keep going in spite of your lions." Then he struck him again with a heavy blow and brought him to his knees. That blow broke Grim's helmet, and the next one cut off one of his arms. The giant roared so terribly that the women were frightened by the sound, yet they were glad to see him stretched out on the ground. The lions were chained, so they could do nothing by themselves. When old Grim, who had been supporting them, was dead, Great-heart said to the pilgrims, "Come now and follow me. No harm will come to you from the lions." So they went on. The women trembled as they passed, and the boys looked as though they might collapse from fear, but they all got by without any further harm.

They soon came within sight of the porter's lodge and hurried toward it, because travel there at night was dangerous. When they reached the gate, the guide knocked. The porter called out, "Who is there?" As soon as the guide said, "It is I," the porter recognized his voice and came down, because Great-heart had often brought pilgrims there before. When he opened the gate and saw Great-heart standing there, he did not at first see the women behind him. He said, "Mr. Great-heart, what brings you here so late tonight?" Great-heart answered, "I have brought some pilgrims here, where my Lord has commanded that they stay. I would have been here sooner, but the giant who supported the lions opposed me. After a long and tiring fight, I have brought him down and brought the pilgrims here safely."

The porter asked, "Will you not come in and stay until morning?"

Great-heart answered, "No. I will return to my Lord tonight."

Christiana said, "Sir, I hardly know how to let you leave us on our pilgrimage. You have been so faithful and loving to us. You fought so bravely for us and counseled us so warmly that I will never forget your kindness."

Mercy added, "I wish we could have your company all the way to the end. How can women as vulnerable as we are keep going on a road so full of trouble without a friend and defender?"

Prayer

Father, thank you that you do not abandon weak pilgrims on dangerous ground. You are my light, my salvation, and the strength of my life. Teach me to stay on your road, even when fear rises close beside me. Send brave helpers when I need them, make me a brave helper when others need me, and guard my steps through every place you call me to pass. In Jesus' name, Amen.
