Still Needing Help

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

— 1 Corinthians 10:13 WEB

From the Classic

Christiana said to them again, "Stand back and leave. We have no money for you to take, for as you can see, we are pilgrims and live by the kindness of our friends."

Then one of the two men said, "We are not attacking you for money. We have come to tell you that if you will grant one small request we ask, we will make women of you forever."

Christiana understood what they meant and answered, "We will not listen to you, pay attention to you, or yield to what you ask. We are in haste and cannot stay. Our business is a matter of life and death." Then she and her companions tried again to pass by them, but the men blocked their way.

The men said, "We do not intend to hurt your lives. It is another thing we want."

Christiana answered, "Yes, you would have us body and soul. I know that is why you have come. But we would rather die here on the spot than let ourselves be brought into snares that would endanger our future well-being." Then both women cried out, "Murder! Murder!" and placed themselves under the laws given for the protection of women. But the men still came toward them, intending to overpower them, so the women cried out again.

Since they were not far from the gate where they had entered, their voices were heard there. Some from the house came out, and when they recognized Christiana's voice, they hurried to help her. By the time they came within sight, the women were in a great struggle, and the children stood nearby crying. The one who came to relieve them called out to the violent men, "What are you doing? Would you make my Lord's people sin?" He also tried to seize them, but they escaped over the wall into the garden of the man who owned the great dog, so the dog became their protector.

Then the Reliever came up to the women and asked how they were. They answered, "We thank your Prince, we are fairly well, though we have been badly frightened. We thank you also because you came to help us; otherwise we would have been overcome."

Prayer

Father, give me escape, strength, and protection when temptation comes near. Keep me from treating sin as a small request when it endangers my soul. Teach me to cry out for help quickly, receive the protection you send, and trust your faithfulness more than my own strength. In Jesus' name, Amen.
