The Tyrant Runs

Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

— Colossians 2:15 WEB

From the Classic

When the day arrived, the command was given. The Prince's men stood bravely at their posts and pressed their main strength again against Ear-gate and Eye-gate. The word among them was, "Soul City is won!" So they attacked the town. Diabolus, with all the strength he could gather, resisted from inside, and his high lords and chief captains fought fiercely for a while against the Prince's army.

After several strong charges from the Prince and his noble captains, Ear-gate was broken open. The bars and bolts that had kept it shut against the Prince were shattered into a thousand pieces. Then the Prince's trumpets sounded, the captains shouted, the town shook, and Diabolus pulled back into his stronghold.

When the Prince's forces had broken open the gate, the Prince himself came forward and set his throne there. He also set his banner beside it on a raised place that his men had built for the mighty slings. That place was called Mount Hear-well. There the Prince stayed, right beside the entrance of the gate. He ordered the golden slings to keep striking the town, especially the castle, because Diabolus had run there for shelter.

From Ear-gate a straight street led to the house of Mr. Recorder, who had held that office before Diabolus took the town. Near his house stood the castle, the dark den where Diabolus had lived for a long time. The captains quickly cleared that street with the help of their slings, making a way to the heart of the town. Then the Prince commanded Captain Boanerges, Captain Conviction, and Captain Judgment to march at once through the town to the old gentleman's gate.

The captains entered Soul City in battle order, with their banners flying. They came up to the house of Mr. Recorder, which was nearly as strong as the castle, and they brought battering rams to set against the castle gates. When they reached the house of Mr. Conscience, they knocked and demanded entrance. The old gentleman did not yet fully understand their purpose, so he had kept his gates shut through the whole fight. Boanerges demanded entrance, and when no one answered, he struck the gate once with the head of a ram. The blow made the old gentleman shake, and his whole house tremble and sway. Then Mr. Recorder came down to the gates and, with trembling lips, asked who was there.

Boanerges answered, "We are the captains and commanders of the great Shaddai and of the blessed Emmanuel his Son, and we demand possession of your house for the use of our noble Prince." Then the battering ram shook the gate again. The old gentleman trembled even more, yet he did not dare keep it shut. He opened the gate, and the King's forces marched in.

Prayer

Father, thank you for sending Jesus into the places the enemy claimed. Thank you that Christ has triumphed over the powers and exposed their weakness. Help me stop treating fear, shame, and sin as though they are stronger than your Son. Break open what has been shut against you, raise Christ's banner in my heart, and teach me to trust the King who enters to save. In Jesus' name, Amen.
